Mary Kim - Amnesty Kilimanjaro Challenge 2012

Story

Hello!

In recognition of the ephemeral nature of our existence, I have finally taken decisive action towards ticking two things off my to-do list - contribute to achieving justice (I cry out for justice!) and conquering Mount Kilimanjaro - by participating in the Amnesty Kilimanjaro Challenge 2012.

This challenge is two-fold: I need to get fit (eep!) and raise  funds for Amnesty International Australia. To this end, my training will entail conquering the peaks (hills) of Canberra, and I have set myself the goal of raising $5,000 (and I will take care of my travel costs of $5,000) by 11:57pm, 28 June 2012 to go towards Amnesty's rally against injustice, oppression, denial of fundamental human rights, and abuse.

I would be deeply grateful for your assistance in reaching this ambitious fundraising goal - funds will be used to hold warlords and dictators accountable, free prisoners of conscience, instill respect for Indigenous peoples and defend human rights in every corner of the world. We can totes make a difference!

07/02/12 - Thank you for your donations to date - I am staggered by your generosity.

Okay anonymous donors, you're very mysterious and you have successfully incited my curiosity - now please reveal yourselves!!

02/03/12 - Heartfelt thanks to the 100 people who attended the Climb it change band night! The night was a smashing success and we raised $3000!! Millions of thanks to the accommodating folk at the Polish Club and the performers on the evening - Waterford (www.waterfordtherockband.com), Acacia Suitcase (myspace.com/acacia.suitcase), Chris Endrey, Bernadette Welch,  Richard Merzian, Hannah Angus, John Blanch, Stephanie Lyons, and Jeremy Sung! A special shoutout to Tam and Inga who were ferocious in the gatekeeper role.

Much gratitude to Fitness First, Mary Kay, Oxfam, Mio Kuhnen, and the Manor House Boutique Hotel for generously donating wonderful prizezs that were raffled off on the evening. The winners were:

  • Jeremy Dore – one night’s accommodation for two people at the Manor House Boutique Hotel in Darlinghurst, Sydney;
  • Michele Bauer – a three-month platinum membership at Fitness First;
  • Briony Clemenson – a his and her cosmetics hamper from Mary Kay cosmetics;
  • Debbie Thomsen – a pair of earrings by designer Mio Kuhnen from Gallery Bilk; and
  • Helen Smith – an ethical hamper provided by Oxfam.

Thank you to the following lovely people for selling raffle tickets: Nico, Honyea, Rich, Lozzie, Kim, Helen,  JPS, Briony, and Nick. Thanks go out to Herby, Sonya and Rich for their help in setting up.

 27/03/12 - Thank you to all those who attended the Amnesty yellow carpet premiere of The Hunger Games at Greater Union Manuka, we raised nearly $500!!

'Twas a delightful evening of buttery popcorn, outstanding company, and excellent film viewing - Margaret and David totes got it wrong. A special round of thanks to Briony, Mio, Tamara, Jon and Amanda for their invaluable help with logistics on the day. Apologies to Meerage and Sharman who lamented that the film didn't have enough "funny bits".

Lucky door prize winners:

Collectors' hardcover edition of "The Hunger Games" - Aaron Wu

CD of the official soundtrack - Chris Endrey

Mary Kay beauty hamper (kindly donated by Briony Clemenson) - Suzanne Richardson

29/05/12 - Thanks to all of you, I have met my target of raising $5000 (though not reflected on this page because only tax deductible donations can be made here)!!! I know I have inveigled you to attend events and make online donations - thank you for your endless generosity and for still talking to me. A special mention to Sonya and Richie who played a major role in the fundraising strategy from concept to rollout.
